Working Groups

The discussion groups and birds-of-a-feather groups noted in the Symposium program in this web site were charged with identifying the major issue areas in the development and implementation of IVC in schools. To follow up with further discussion and possible action, working groups of volunteers from the Symposium participants and other interested professionals have been formed in four areas defined below. The responsibility of the groups is to further define the sub-issues in each area, identify policy implications and recommend actions which can be taken to address the issues. They are further encouraged to seek funding sources for the actions. Any interested users of videoconferencing in K-12 settings are welcome to join a working group. To do so, send an e-mail message to Don Holznagel, holznagd@nwrel.org, requesting to participate in the group and identifying your experience in videoconferencing.

The research group actually met at the symposium and identified research needs. They have noted that most of the available research results are from studies at the post-secondary level, and that there is a need for research in the application of IVC in elementary and secondary levels. They have met by e-mail and reviewed some opportunities for funding for further research, which they are now pursuing

A clearinghouse is among the top needs expressed at the symposium, and this group is charged with investigating the development implications of different models of clearinghouses. The group has met by phone conference and e-mail, and their major focus is on a web-based clearinghouse. Several current examples sponsored by various organizations have been reviewed. Issues of design, maintenance and cost are being examined.
